I got the device to work perfectly. The device is absolutely astounding. You install it into a vehicle and you then speak to it via SMS or GPRS. If you ask it to report its current location it sends you a Google maps URL. The device has many features such as reading door status, fuel status, listening to onboard coversation, watching an onboard video and even shutting off fuel flow. It records all its travels which can be downloaded or watched in real time. You can ringfence it so that it sends an SMS if the vehicle exits the ringfence. It also has an SOS button that send an alert to a specified number.

Eish...this is a really nice toy. I've had to figure it out for a customer who wants to install them into about 50 trucks to start with.

It sure is. Let me tell you one thing, the Chinese sure don't make it easy to use their products, between chinglish, missing components and an incorrect manual you are very much on your own. I suppose being technically minded and enjoying the thrill of figuring things out I was lucky enough to get it to work eventually.

I am going to spend tonight thinking about alternative applications for the device. I am sure that one could use it for other purposes than just to track cars and trucks. What else it there that one would want to track in realtime (no you can't stick it to the wife or girlfriend with double sided tape)

Did you import this gizmo directly from the far East or did you buy it through an agent? How much did you pay for it, I think viable uses might be limited by the cost. All the uses that spring to mind immediately would certainly be fun but highly illegal

We imported it directly. They cost about 130USD ex import costs.

I don't think the term "illegal" has much meaning in this country.

I've got vehicle tracking on my entire fleet - and it costs a fair amount of change every month using the tracking service company.

How viable would it be to be purchase these things and "do it yourself direct" as it were?

The tracking services offer free recovery if the vehicle is stolen - how true that is I don't know. You are certainly technically minded enough to set the devices up and to monitor them. The setting up and management is not rocket science at all. The company has a web portal that you can use to look at your vehicles. Setting alarms and ringfencing your vehicles is as easy as pie. If I had a fleet of vehicles this is the route that I would go.

When you say on board video, you mean a camera to see inside the cab? facing forward can see road from remote viewing?
