    Richard Pike on Morning Live

Did anyone else catch Richard Pike on Morning Live this morning?

Overall I thought he did very well
But I do have a reservation.

    No-one?

OK - it was about 5 minutes at around 6.15 in the morning. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Morning Live publish video snips and transcripts like Carte Blanche does, so the main points as I recall:

Manufacturing is going backwards and there are a number of forces causing it.
Above inflation payroll increases are harming SA competitiveness.
    Labour productivity is dropping.
Collective bargaining disadvantages smaller companies and is inhibiting new entrants.
Small business is the key to job creation.
COSATU protects the employed (and thereby is effectively anti-job creation).
The rise of labour brokers is due to the imbalances created by the LRA.
Government isn't a neutral player between organised labour and business due to the ANC-COSATU connection.
    NEDLAC is at an impasse.

Of course it didn't take long for the first SMS to come in saying COSATU and the LRA is not harming job creation
But I'm no longer amazed that so many people can't join the dots on this one. After all, how could employee protectionism possibly hurt employment?

I have to say Vuyo Mbuli is a good interviewer (either that or it's the producer in his ear, I guess) and has a knack for asking some pretty sharp questions. And the one that struck me was when he asked i.r.o. the NEDLAC impasse "so is there no middle ground?"

Richard Pike effectively said "no, not really."
And that's my reservation. There has to be a win/win way forward.

Quite clearly Nedlac isn't looking for it at the moment, though.

When you have never been involved in business, nor have you employed anyone to work for, then you can not see what Richard Pike is on about.

I support Richard's view point, but then if you are an employee, of course you want job protection, you do not want to be threatened because you do not perform, what's this the boss must just pay if I pitch up to work, the fact that I do nothing is irrelevant.

To get for free, means some one has to had paid for it.
