    Income Tax Registration

    Hi
Can anyone please tell me - for a cc or a pty, can a tax practitioner apply for an Income Tax registration on behalf of a company, or must a director or managing member apply in person? I have had conflicting information and would like to clarify.

    Thank you

The directors/accountant/audit/tax practitioner/members can apply for the tax number and it does not need to be in person - you can post it or drop it off at their drop boxes.

You will just need the documents specified to accompany the registration.

Thanks Geraldine. SARS themselves told me that the main member / director has to do it in person and can't authorise someone else to do this. Its so frustrating calling SARS. you speak to one person and get one answer, speak to another person and then get another answer!

Do you find if you post it gets handled quickly enough if you send it registered? which address do you use? and which docs?

    Thanks so much.

You should actually always phone 3 times - if 2 people say the same, then you know.

No, you don't need to do it in person at all. Just drop it off in one of their drop boxes outside the building. For posting - they used to give out envelopes in order to send mail but i haven't seen one in quite a while.... if you don't have one of those you should just drive the the nearest branch.

Why on earth is an income tax number not automatically generated when a company is registered? Every company must have one, so surely common sense dictates it should be part of the registration process?

The person you spoke to was probably thinking of VAT where the requirements are much more stringent nowadays.

    Geraldenek is 100%.
Download an IT77C form from SARS' site. The form is so basic it does not even require a signature. Some pointers:
    - Include a CIPRO / CIPC document confirming the registered details.
    - Include an ORIGINAL bank confirmation letter.

Companies incorporated prior to 2 May 2011, and all cc's, would have been registered for Income Tax by CIPRO.
Companies incorporated since 2 May 2011 are not registered by CIPC, you have to do so.

If yours is one of the former, post the registration number and I will look it up for you.

  9. Thanks given for this post:

That amazes me. It really seems to be a backward step. So they used to automatically register the companies and now don't. I can't figure out the logic.

Is the bank letter essential? What happens if you don't really need a bank account? Unusual but possible.
