These are shark infested waters.

From experience, not me personally, the AIA, are not the angels they make themselves out to be.

It's the way they go about their business that gets contractors backs out of place.

The AIA's can't touch the guys that are not registered with anything.

You guys expect contractors to roll over and die with fear when you roll onto site.

You guys make up your own regulations to suite your view points.

I have seen before where you guys were on site riding a particular contractor. On this occasion your little inspector was addimant that the geyser needed an isolator next to it. Your inspector said this applied to all the geysers in this small block of apartments. The contractor replied well what would you like me to connect the isolators to on the gas geysers. After 20 minutes of trying to get this through to him the contractor gave up.

I have also seen how the AIA seem to develop a vendetta with contractors that seem to get the better of them on site.

I have also seen with a particular coc where the AIA got involved and the contractor would not back down. After some time the new owner called the contractor to say he had gotten a quote to have the work corrected as per the AIA faults. Lone behold when he faxed the quote through and it was from a company and the contact persons name was Norman Palmer.

So I trust the AIA as far as I can throw them.

I am not condoning illegal work. But it is my opinion that the ECA should deal with this. The ECA also need to wake up and take control.

I have seen a letter on Friday, issued by the DoL at a recent seminar that they will be taking over registration.We should very soon receive a statement from them to this affect.

My experience was how the regs were interpreted back then depended on who the contractor concerned was

No, unfortunately you can't have the industry association doing the regulation either.

There has to be a situation where there are no conflicting priorities in any of the parties.

The Association acts in the interests of the members.
The regulator's main goal is to ensure compliance to regulations (and penalising/closing down contractors is very much a last resort).
The contractor delivers a compliant product for a reasonable return.
And the standards are built on a logical, consistent platform with safety as the top priority.

Hi all, can someone clarify the qualifications requirements of an AIA since we only seem to hear from A Palmer.I would also like to ask the AIA about when they actually did any electrical installation work, just asking.

Why bother? The case against JP Bornman of Volta Electrical has been on the Prosecutor's desk for almost a year! At that time it was the first and only case submitted by the DOL.
