Financial Independence by my 30th Birthday - Join Me!

A few weeks ago, I'm not sure of exactly when, I decided to set a BHAG (Big Hairy-Ass Goal) for myself to become financially free (or financially independent as I'm now calling it) by my 30th birthday. My goal is not to be rich and famous, just financially independent. That is to say that I want to be in a position where I can choose, each day, whether or not I want to work. Read more >>

Excellent read Norri. You are right, financial independence is not so much about having assets and bling, but having the cash flow to enjoy life. So what if you don't fly 1st class, as long as you get to your destination and enjoy the flight! Investing in time to spend with the people that you love is soooo rewarding that you hardly need any thing else. Being stress free is also good for your health and allows you to really enjoy life. It really is the little things that matter.
    Good luck with your goal

PS.Playing the guitar is good therapy. What music do you play?

    Thanks Blurock

Well I don't play any Stevie Ray Vaughan but he's one of my favourite blues guitarists My wife and I danced to "Pride and Joy" on our wedding day. Was fun, even though we couldn't dance for sh%t :P

I mostly improvise over backing tracks but I'd say my favourite stuff to improvise over would be ballad-y type music. Followed by the blues and I also enjoy playing a bit of jazz, even though I don't really know what I'm doing, I sometimes get the "feel" right

Financial independence is not only essential it's vital. I don't want to be rich, but I also don't want to work set hours, I want to be off every weekend and every December. I don't want to struggle and worry about paying accounts but most importantly I want job satisfaction.

In my experience the big thing is to have a goal - doesn't really matter much what it is. Without a goal you just drift...

So good fortune achieving your goal. Just remember to set a new one not too long after you acheive this one

Without dreams and goals where would mankind really have been today. I admire Norri's goal as it's original, not imported from someone else. It's a challenging and brave goal, but it will be worth it when he accomplishes it. My ideals have changed drastically, I'm not pursuing wealth, there's nothing wrong with wealth, I'm pursuing peace of mind, contentment and job satisfaction. That said, I also don't want to have that constant worry of not been able to pay account. I say this from experience!"Life is what happens to you when you busy making other plans."(John Lennon)

"If you worry you die, if you don't worry you still die, why worry?"

As the evergreen Alfred E Neumann says "Wot me worry?"

I have lived Norri's dream for the past 40 of my working years, proof, I am still here, I've had more downs than ups but in the end I made time to enjoy myself, no bucks to travel but no fly now pay later worries either.

Awesome replies guys Thanks for the support! It REALLY does help keep me motivated - especially after the awful 24 hours I've just had.

Wynn - congrats. I would love to chat on Skype and share notes!
