I finally got around to visiting the DOL.

I am told I cannot register for 3 years again, I am told it must be done every year.

I am told I must pay at the cashier and not EFT.

I cannot email the documents, as I did last time, I have to take all the document including certificated copies and the originals as proof.

Surely the DOL is the DOL.

Could this be why so many people are operating as pirates and get a mate to sign off COC's.

Maybe just operate as a gate installer or a DIY handyman, you dont have to register with anybody.

If you register as an electrical contractor, there is along list of registrations required and even as I alarm installer, you also have to register with a bunch of organisations.

Maybe if there were less paperwork and more production from DOL side the Pirates and illegall operators can be stop.
Maybe if DOL reacts to the complaints and make examples of those operating illegally we will have less problems and might even be able to do our work.
Maybe registering can be done online like with your car license...
Maybe I must stop being a scary cat, don't register at DOL, issue COC's go on with life, what is the worst that can happens?

The problem with not registering at DOL is that most attorneys, insurance companies etc. will not accept a coc without the DOL registration letter attached.

We are told not to divulge our personal information. I was told by ECA that under no circumstances must I supply a copy of my DOL registration form to anyone. Good luck with that one. You might as well close shop.

I never took that advice. In fact, I include a copy of my DOL registration together with all my quotes, so that the prospective client has peace of mind. I have had feedback from clients that that is precisly why they accepted my quote.

It has taken me a while, but I have learned not to do what other people suggest or recommend if it effects your business negatively. One has to look after oneself. Nobody else is gonna do it for you.
