Is this outside fuse box legal?

    Dear members,
An electrical contractor installed a fuse box on an outside wall. It’s under a roof overhang. I asked if this outside fuse box should be in a box, protected from the elements. He said no it’s legal the way it is. Can experts tell me if this is compliant?

Please post a photo of the fuse box and location. It will make it easier to give informed comment.

      5.6 Environmental conditions.

5.6.1. Electrical equipment shall be able to withstand the environmental coditions of the location in which it is installed. However, electrical equipment may be protected to allow it's use in a particular environment for which it is not designed, provided that the environment shall allow for the normal heating and cooling of the equipment.

      Above is the appropriate standard.

What this means, as far as a DB or as you call it a fuse box is concerned, is that the contents of the DB ( circuit breakers etc ) need not be weatherproof but the enclosure (DB) should be.

I work on the assumption that if it's outside, irrespective of it being under an overhang, it is effected by the weather, therefore I use a weatherproof enclosure.

It doesn't make any sense not to. The price difference between a "normal" and weatherproof DB is so little, I regard it as negligable.

I don't think one can refer to it as illegal, however, in my opinion, it's not ideal.

I would have used a weatherproof DB.

Lets hear the opinions of the other toppies.

It's a case of "don't like it but couldn't fail it". Yes, I would have used IP rated but it looks like it's not going to be exposed to the elements
Can't see for sure but looks like that's not a double pole main switch on the far left - that would be a problem for me.

It looks like the tray of the DB is a flush tray, is it advisable to use a flush tray on the surface?

I'm not sure about those drip loops in the cables being that close to the DB....

I still say "A Su1 box with trunking would have looked a lot more professional" but being able to cut an R250 or R300 of your R?? 000 quote to get the job is most important!?
