    Electric cars

I see there are kits you can buy to convert a vehicle into an electric vehicle

A 600 hp electric powered beetle sounds like my kind of car ... fortunately for me ... my son custom builds classic cars and hot rods ... he specialises in chassis strengthening and rebuilds ... brake systems etc ... something to go get bread and milk in the morning ... no noise ... you will only smell the rubber burning

He has just completed a ford range conversion ... removed the brand new diesel engine and fitted 5 litre V8 in its place with electronic fuel management ... what separates him for m the rest ... the ATD.

I'm here in the bushveld where game viewing vehicles are bountiful.
Of course the idle speed at which they are driven in not good for the engine and replacing old engines with electric ones would be fantastic.

No need for high top speed or a 0-100 sprint less than 10 seconds needed. However, being able to go all day long and charge overnight is a must.

you could fit solar panels on the roof and charge the battery while you driving or

fit removeable batteries and swop them out after each game drive.

it super quiet which is a huge benefit for game viewing.

you cut out fuel cost to an absolute minimum.

          Then go to the comments

Solar/inverters/batteries and electrical cars are the big thing ... regardless of the complaints about disposing of the batteries ... I am sure by the time it becomes a huge problem ... Tesla will have space ships dumping batteries and any other dangeries gases etc ... into space.

We already have a huge refuse disposal problem ... people renting buildings to use to dump toxic or any type of waste ... then just up and leaving ...the owner of the property sits with a massive expense trying to get rid of the rubbish ... anyway I digress

Is this the opportunity I have been waiting for ... could it be time to change my focus from silly electrical jobs and move in this direction.

Talk is that by by 2030 (9 years time electric cars will be as common as KFC)

Time to step up and start looking ahead.

Firstly ... classic cars ... things are falling into place ... if the youngster can built a chassis for a V8 with a 6 litre plus motor and provide sufficient braking to bring that 2 ton vehicle to a stand still ... I dont see why he cant build the chassis to support an electric motor ... big business in the UK.

What will be required to keep electric cars going ... certainly not the Eskom grid.

So charge stations ... just imagine what it will cost to charge a vehicle with electricity from Eskom by 2030 ... eeesish.

EV chargers ... An EV charger requires a 30 amp supply at least ... throw in a super charger ... and you gonna need nuclear power to keep the lights on.

Lots of work for sparkies ... running power supplies from the DB to a charge station in the garage ... I cant see them being mounted in the front garden like in other parts of the world.

Time to start looking at a solar system which will provide enough power to power your house and a charge your car.

I am busy looking into carports for my driveway and behind my workshop ... I want to close in an area and make the extension out of steel frames ... in the sides and fit a solar panels as the roof.

I also want to fit solar panels above the entertainment area ... the only problem is the C channel the fellas fitted is only a 150 mm across 9 m ... so what happens in heavy rain the the roof sags ... so I need to start looking at strengthening the support.

Its time to leave the electrical installations to the rats and mice.

              We gonna need

              solar panels

              Batteries

              Inverters

              EV chargers

Smart DB with remote control and power management.

Why not build a big enough factory to do everything under one roof.

Trying to find an affordable solution which offer all of the above has proven to be a bigger problem than I thought.

You can buy one component form one company and another company ... then get another company to supply remote viewing and another to supply PV panels ... Victron is abut the closest solution ... but still not a total solution ... then there is Tesla but also lacking a total solution.
You want a neat looking panel on the roof ... with a inverter battery and smart DB that looks like an appliance in the kitchen ... not these untidy looking eye sores that people boost on social media.

You wan to be able to mount the unit in your entrance hall so that it can be a topic of conversation as people walk into your house.

Its getting there. With the new SiC (Silicon Carbide) FETs and Diodes, physical dimensions of finished products reduce the size by 2/3rds as compared to conventional electronics, and can run with out a cooling fan, if the thermal side is well designed. These devices can work up to 125°C.

There is a new generation called GaNs
GaN transistors are significantly faster and smaller than silicon MOSFETs. ... Gallium Nitride or GaN is a highly mobile semiconductor electron semiconductor (HEMT) that is proving to be a real added value in meeting new applications. If we looking at lets say a 60 kw/hr battery in a vehicle and you have a little 10 kw/hr battery for your house ... you wouldnt want the house battery draining into your vehicle.

SO the question is going to be ... do you think Eskom will offer time use tariffs to try get people to charge vehicles in the early hours of the morning ... just imagine the all those cellphones hidden all over the job sites trying to charge for free ... cables all over trying to sneak in a vehicle charge

I see Tesla no longer offer free super charges for new vehicle purchases.

Imagine being a fly on the wall in meeting rooms at vehicle manufacturing plants ... like fax machines and DVD rentals ... are you going to be caught with your pants around your ankles?

Yip the world is evolving ... man I wish I was 25 years old again starting a family and a new venture (something I will never regret... but would do things a whole lot different) things are happening so fast ... its exciting times.

I need to learn to play nicely with the other kids ... there are so many new and exiting things happening a one man operation cannot survive ... you need teams with different skills to keep up.

I have been sitting in my office learning how to setup a Pi to link to a mecer inverter for remote viewing ... making the cables needed to link the inverter to the Pi ... it would be so much easier if I had a staff member who tackled stuff like programing the alarm systems ... setting up CCTV ... writing programs for PLC's ... It didnt bother me 20 years ago ... I could work 12 hours then get back to the office ... plan the projects for the next day ... prepare invoices drive around collect the cheques .. . put them into the deposit book ready for the bank the following day ... then go into the workshop and design and build control panels till early hours of the morning ... be prepared for the staff when they arrived ... make sure their day was planned and material were ordered.

I am actually getting rather excited about this whole EV thing ... my fuel bill per month with this new petrol increase ... will exceed R4.5k.

A little run around EV van will be all I need.

I would love an electric van here in S.A.
Much like what Artisan Electrics has and Thomas Nagy over in the U.K.

That would be brilliant here for the short to medium jobs.

I don't get why people assume that buying and running an EV is going to be cheaper than an IC vehicle. Go buy a bike, scooter or a 20 year old 1100 UNO and save lots of cash right now!

The cheapest IC car in the country is R180k

Now look at these idiotic EV things:
