Electrical sub contractors

I would like to hear what your thoughts are on this subject ... sub contracting work out to other small businesses.

I had on average about 5 small companies which would help with those little jobs which required attention ... be it for a regular customer or a new customer I just couldn't get to.

What I have found ... I spent more time on the phone trying to guide them through the task ... they wouldn't pitch when they said they would ... they try steal my customers by leaving their business card ... this didn't bother me ... it wouldnt take long and the customer would be back.

It was more the time wasted guiding them while I am trying to do my own work ... just became a waste of my time.

I am getting a lot of new business calls ... which I just cant take on ... the very next question ... "can you recommend someone" the answer "no".

Do I employ more staff and grow and become a full time nanny again ... to spend my life cleaning up after everyone?

Less is more.Nothing in sa is in favour of a business owner employing more people so just learn to say no as tough as it is.This is coming from somebody that employs over 30 electricians. We have a lot of work and throw big figures around but dont mean we make a lot of money due to our size and trying to downscale(thank bargaining council)

Been there done that ... on one site back in 2004 ... 70 sparkies ... 2 companies sub constracting ... I had to work 20 hours a day 7 days a week just to manage the staff ... I only used my tools from 10 pm at night till 2 -3 am in the morning to to try fix or move the job a little faster.

The bargaining council ... I have nothing good to say .................

Come end of year ... leave pay and bonuses ... we all know what coming in 2 months time ... fortunately for me ... I go do factory relocations or shutdowns ... so I work and make up the money to pay staff while they are on leave ... they get to spend christmas with the4 family ... I get to work ... I must say it is normally the best time to work ... roads are quiet ... no staff to piss me off or spoon feed.
