Have you registered your dogs and cats yet?

The new Cape Town pet bylaws are in force and you have a limited time in which to register all your dogs and cats. Failure to do so will carry a R300.00 fine for each offence.

More interestingly there's a few things I didn't realise about the registration. Firstly there's limits on how many animals you can have according to your property size...but if you're over the official allowance and you register all your animals then you're allowed to have the excess.

Secondly if you don't register your animals now you won't be on the roll as a pet owner so in the future, as a previously unregistered owner, if you want to register dogs you'll need to get signed permission from your neighbours. There's some more info here and here's the bylaw attached for your enjoyment.

Thanks for this Andy, I wasn't even aware it.

We can register our animals online - here's the link: https://www.capetown.gov.za/en/CampA...reanimals.aspx

    Touché!

Interesting one. We used to have dog licences in Durban, but it was discontinued some years ago. I wonder if it'll make a comeback.

What worries me is why they want the registration process. At the moment they're going to great lengths to emphasise that there's no licensing fees in the pipeline and the registration process is free. I'm not sure why they've got such a bee in their bonnet but I'm damn sure they have something up their sleeve.

My first thought was it's been driven by the increase in Rabies, but on second thought there could be more to it.

There are bylaws in Durban limiting the number of domestic animals on a property - you've probably got something similar in Capetown too. I don't think anything has been done for years now to enforce those bylaws. Maybe that's where this is heading?

I'm surprised they haven't brought this method of raising taxes back for all the municipalities. They'll even be looking at your rats and mice as well. Watch Ratex sales sales go up as RatTax goes into place. Another couple of thousand employees added to the countries municipal payload as animal licence inspectors. Anything to do with my dogs I take very personally! @any new by law restricting the number of pets you may have or regulating your pets registration for revenue purposes.." Bloody agent, Come out, COME OUT! You've got rubbish in your trousers!"
