The President is to be commended

The elections have come and gone.

Whatever else was in evidence, it is obvious that the twin issues of racism and ethnicity were factors, either in reality or in perception.

Jacob Zuma has responded in two (2) notable ways -
    1. He gave a speech warning Councillors that it was no longer to be business as usual; that there must be accountability; that there must be service and delivery; and that this should be dispensed to ALL, even those who are not supporters of the ANC.

    2. He has now formally called for serious introspection on the issue of alienation of other race/ethnic groups. See - http://www.timeslive.co.za/Politics/...mentsPage=true.

    3. He had previously called into question the utility of the current BEE model.

Our President is to be commended for this reaction. He is displaying yet unprecedented leadership. More importantly, he is displaying understanding of what it is to be a true leader and/or President, i,e that he is a President of ALL South Africans and that he has an obligation to reconcile differences, not promote or foster them.

To my mind, it reveals that he understands that SA is now on a very dangerous path, i.e the path of racial/ethnic division. He understands that many South Africans now feel alienated in the country of their birth. As said previously, such alienation is always as a result of a failure of leadership. As a true leader Zuma is not prepared to acquiesce.

I cannot understand the wall of cynical, irreverent, contemptuous comments posted in reaction to the Times Live report on Zuma's stance. Perhaps it is an indication of how much damage the racist trumpets in the ANC have already done? Certainly cynicism is fueled by the fact that nothing was done about Jimmy Manyi and Malema for their overt racism of the worst kind.

In any event that negativity vindicates the stance by our President that we have a serious problem that must be now frankly addressed.

I agree with him. Passionately! It is long overdue. The same conclusion was reached on the eTV program, "Judge for Yourself", chaired by Judge Davis recently.

It is my hope that he configures the envisaged conversation to include a complete cross-section of our people. As said previously, he will be surprised by the fund of common sense, good counsel and wisdom that will emanate.

Please do it Mr President. It is the right thing to do.
    Let us have the conversation!

My concern would be that our President seems to be far better at talking the talk than walking it so far.

    Dave,
I agree with you. Talk is cheap. Action would most probably cost him his job.

The way to clear this racism, is to immediately suspend and remove offenders who have blatantly nailed their colours to the mast.
Only this way will he show that he means what he says. Until this type of action occurs, it will be business as usual, screw the public.

@ChrisNG53 Do really believe anything the ANC's speech writers say? Those are just speeches.
Methinks you are a sock puppet. Do they pay you per post or per hour?

The ANC now is forcing a Bill that will IMPRISON anyone that blows the whistle on their vile criminal acts for up to 25 years. (citation needed) The daily reinforcement of white genocide through constant Apartheid themed programming on SABC is in full swing. The ruling party's goal is nothing short of the extermination of all white South Africans and their sentiment is clear whenever they deploy the entire military when Zuma visits Cape Town.

About a 1000 South Africans are murdered each year by police and those are just the cases where they don't even bother to hide it. Our police force is infested with organized crime and ANC thugs who think nothing of killing protesters or anybody who disagrees with the regime.

More about this, along with several other attacks, including a 'suicide' murder, an assault of witnesses in the police station here:

If you want to understand my thinking on our ANC government then go - http://coginito.blogspot.com/2011/03...scionably.html and http://coginito.blogspot.com/2011/03...-and-lady.html and http://coginito.blogspot.com/2010/11...th-africa.html just for starters.

I am fully aware of the really terrible problems we have as regards ANC leadership.

However I simply do not believe that the only approach to the problem is confrontation, vilification and contempt. We have to accept that much of what occurs is a product of genuine but misguided belief, like our Affirmative Action model. There is a difference between constructive criticism and contemptuous belligerence. I also accept that I owe the ANC a whole bunch more than they owe me. And most of all I always accept that I may just be wrong!

Talking at each other instead of to each other and point scoring at every opportunity will achieve nothing but more confrontation and intransigence.

The fact of the matter is that President Jacob Zuma has behaved like a President of all South Africans in this instance. That is to be appreciated. It is to be commended ... because it may well be a long overdue start to healing and fixing this very sick nation.

so what should we do setup a task team to investigate...seems to be the solution to all the anc problems (setup a task team and have a conference at some expensive hotel) do you think we could also claim some of our tax money back to do this? we would be creating employment.

The ruling party is scum. They are the vilest of scum. They have raped our new "democracy" and election system consistently. ANC officials have direct ties to crime syndicates, drugs and poaching. They shoot protesters, give badges to serial murderers and rapists and train people to torture and murder farmers.

How will "changing" MY attitude and perception affect these wretched depraved bipedal excrement? How will creating "awareness" among law abiding, monogamous, middle class whites, stop aids rape? "Good" people aren't the problem in the first place. If you want to make a difference we need to hang every last corrupt politician, rapist and murderer from a tree.

Zuma is a criminal and a rapist. He's already sold out our country numerous times to China and India thus destroying our local industries. Now Wallmart (Makro, builders warehouse, Trade Centre, Game, same group) will finish off the remaining small businesses. Zuma will make a speech about "job creation" and then give the ruthless foreign mega corps the go ahead to eliminate independent business IN THE SAME Publication.

So now we are supposed to be introspective and feel guilty about decisions made decades ago that did not benefit me at all nor had anything to do with me? Don't even mention Apartheid or "previously disadvantaged" to me. No illiterate black given a job because of BEE fascism feels even remotely guilty about being woefully unqualified, the white person who was fired before them nor the impact on the company or institution now suffering because of them.

The ANC are nazis, but Nazi's that sell their own people into slavery, sell stolen national assets to foreign interests and destroy vital infrastructure forever. I wish just one Xhosa or Zulu would take responsibility for these last 16 years of destruction, criminality, genocide, decay and for the majority of this country: real hell.

@Superscenic -- as much as I have the maturity to distill out the merit in your post, what I do know, with every fibre in my body, is that this type of approach will only incur the hurt, resentment and anger of perhaps every Black person in this country ... and they are the ones who have our interests/future in their hands.

So what exactly do you hope to achieve by this vitriolic approach? Who, of those who can influence change for the good, will listen to you?

I'd be interested in reading Superscenic's view of the Steve (Hofmeyr) letter to Julius thread.
