    Registering as a Debt Counselor?

    Hi there,

I work for one of SA's big life assurers and am investigating debt counseling, as a significant % of our existing customer base is suffering with over-indebtedness. I am doing the debt counseling course in two weeks time but was informed I would probably not be able to register as a debt counselor due to my employment status. I was also informed that employees of Sanlam who had passed the course had been denied registration by the NCR.

I checked the NCR website and my company is not a credit provider, credit bureau or debt collection agency. Therefore surely I should be able to register? Unfortunately I can't get hold of anyone at the NCR to give me a definitive answer.

    Any ideas anyone?

Here's a wild guess as to the problem...

I would think it advisable that the debt counsellor is independant from the debtor and creditors. That could make you being the debt counsellor for clients of your employer problematic as you could stand accused of having a vested interest.
The trouble with opportunity is it normally comes dressed up as work.
