Lightbulb Workers took a few bosses hostage.

There was something interesting on the radio this morning. Apparently workers are now taking bosses on in a big way. Apparently “and I am to be corrected I am sure” these workers took a few bosses hostage. Now imagine that... Well if anything they are listing now! I am sure of that much.

The question is how did this happen? And why I am sure there will be more to this story.

Some contract mineworkers have taken 4 supervisors hostage and are holding them down a mine. They are demanding permanent employment.

I've got a full time job recommendation for them - jailbird!

It must be said that I would never say or do anything to promote violence. However, how dispirit must these contractors be? Some contractors really get the worst treatment and are never sure of their jobs. I honestly think that government must do an investigation or this scenario might repeat itself.

You've got to think how dispirited business owners are. You take on an employee and it's like you're getting married.

You're expected to be their bank (no matter that they need the loan because they're behind on their debts instalments...)
You're expected to pay enough to support a spouse, a girlfriend or more, a horde of kids, a house in the suburbs, company car, cellphone (which will be used for 80% personal calls) and their retirement one day.
You're expected to give them an education.
You're expected to pay for all their mistakes.
You're expected to find new customers to replace the ones they didn't service properly.
You're expected to pay more for everything you buy and charge less to your customers.
You're expected to promote employees fast enough so that they are the boss by age 30 and able to consider retirement by 40-45.
And if you don't deliver, your employees can trash the place without ever saying sorry.

On second thoughts, why the heck am I trying to be an employer....

Dave, and that's the big problem. Too many people think that they own the company if they are employed there. It's actually a privilege to be employed by anyone, not a right!

...and if private enterprise can't deliver, government must

Quite a few fairly ugly protests about service delivery of late, I see.

If anything employment comes with responsibly. Yes I agree with you. Government must take a more active role when it comes to training and training cost. However if you use untrained labour how can this be cost effective? You will have more mistakes, lose more money and lose more customers in the end.

Secondly the truth is the truth. Everyone has a right to life. And everyone has a right to family so if your worker is honest hardworking and trained then is it too much to expect a decent pay?

In the end there is no balance between government and businesses. And there is no balance between businesses and workers. Everyone works on a dog eats dog principle and this is unhealthy for any economy.

But if your employees destroy your property or hurt your business in any way! You can take legal action. If someone abuse things like a mobile phone and you can prove that it has been abused you can take legal action.

    Fact is:
    YOU employed those people.
YOU did the screening of every single worker.
YOU did the background checks for violent behaviour at his or her previous employment.
YOU have the ability to refuse employment.

Just remember in business it is all about YOU. Then there is also your contracts and renewal of contacts. Fact is that you can implement control and stay in control if YOU did your homework. Basically it comes down to planning.
