Running or owning a recording studio sounds like fun. However, there is a fair variety on the stretch between Johannesburg and Durban.

I'd have a few questions if I was picking a location.

    City or town?
How important is a nearby airport?
Are you looking for a quiet location?
How important is the ambiance of the location?
The trouble with opportunity is it normally comes dressed up as work.

Forget Durban, everything in music and advertising happens in Gauteng. Used to be the FD of a Durban Recording Studio in early 90's. Despite having 80% of the ad work generated in Durban we still battled to run profitably until we set up a record company and that allowed us to turn the corner....

You need huge capital backing since the artists are always looking for huge advances. I'm assuming you have a sound engineer background? Plus the DJ's aint gonna play your songs unless you 'incentivise' them and the station librarians have a strange habit of 'misfiling' your material too.....A few bucks always seems to jog their memory cells thou......

i v been producing music for almost 3 years now, i know its not enough and the equipment that im using is not advanced and i need a huge capital for marketing my business as you ve said.so i decided to go to umsobomvu youth found to get a sme loan, about 250k for a more advanced studio.so they asked me to submit a business plan to evaluate it. my partner is a professional sound engineer who will be assisting me in the studio full time.so what i really need now is a strong business plan as im still doing research about marketing and runing a successful recording studio.
