    Please help !!!

    I have a laptop with a 3G datacard.
It connects fine to the 3G network as well as the VPN server at work.
I can also ping sites. ie: ping www.google.co.za.
When I open Internet Explorer it keeps returning a DNS error.
Now I don't know if I am correct in saying this but, when you can ping a site, then the dns was resolved.

Vodacom can't help me and I don't even want to think of phoning MS.
    Machine Specs
    1.5Ghz
    512Mb
    Xp Pro Sp_2
    And Now IE 7

    Please help.

You could still be having a problem with your dns setting. Some dns servers are not that hot.

First try opening www.google.co.za in IE. A good test of settings for IE (as opposed to pings).

Also take a look around this forum on MyADSL.

    3G connection

    Thanks for the reply.

I still can't open any sites in IE.
I have gotten hold of Vodacom's DNS, but that doesn't work either.
The DNS is now set to obtain automatically and there are no proxy settings.

I phoned Vodacom (again) and still no help there.
They said that they will call me back within the next 24 hrs.
I'm now thinking of reinstalling the OS. (last resort)

    Don't. At least not yet.

I'm going to assume you are managing to post here by not using 3G. Which means you are only having the problem when routing down the 3G connection (?) Just how are you connecting for these posts? Different machine or different connection.

There a few areas that could be causing the problem.

Firewall settings - what firewall protection do you have?
Connection settings - anything suspect in Internet options? Look under connections tab
Vodafone settings - whole new ballgame, and to an extent why I suggested the MyADSL forum.

My experience is that a post in the forum I've linked to above gets better results than the Vodacom help desk. There are a couple of Vodacom staffers that really know what they are doing paying close attention to that forum.

    3G connection

Yes i'm using a different machine.
I've disabled the firewall and had 2 other people also look at it and no luck.

    I will check out MyADSL.

I'm thinking of taking it to Vodaworld in the morning and see if they can come up with anything.
    Thanks fo your help.

Probably a good idea. There are different profiles when connecting via 3G and I suspect this might be the problem. I got mine done at Vodacom Customer Care at Gateway and have had no issues since.

Let us know how it goes and best of luck.
