    Inspection by DoL.

    Just been through an inspection by Department of Labour. No problems, thank goodness

    But for others out there, this is what they look at:

    Your various registrations:

    CIPRO
    PAYE
    Workman's Compensation
    UIF
    Relevant SETA

    Copies of documents:

    Payslip
    Workman's Compensation last assessment

    Sight of following:

    Employment contracts
    OHS and Basic conditions of Employment notices
    Attendance register
    First aid kit
    Fire extinguishers
    Seperate male & female toilets

    Additional information:

    Number of staff
    Industry category
    Safety officer
    Standard hours of work
    Overtime rates
    Standard leave policy
    Sick leave policy
    Maternity leave policy
    Family responsibility leave policy
    Bargaining council
    Employment Equity
    Trade Union

    Some aspects were not applicable in my instance, but they do ask the question.

    They then went on to interview 3 members of staff. I suppose for verification purposes and to make sure I don't beat them with a stick.

    DoL is definitely more active on these inspections. Here's a press report from M&G today

    Labour dept cracks down on Free State employers
    Several employers in the Free State might be hauled to court or fined for breaking labour laws, the provincial department of labour said on Wednesday.

    This follows an inspection to check if they are adhering to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and other labour acts, spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said.

    "The four-day crackdown by the inspectors also assessed employers' compliance on other acts like unemployment insurance fund [UIF], employment equity, compensation for occupational injuries and diseases, as well as occupational health and safety," Sigabi said.

    Forty-two firms were inspected in the private security, contract-cleaning, wholesale, retail, manufacturing and construction sectors.

    Most of them were found to be contravening the working conditions and wage regulations applicable to them under the law, she said.

    Employees are working without any contracts, payslips or attendance registers, and are being underpaid.

    "Some of the employees were not registered with the UIF and the compensation fund while the Occupational Health and Safety Act was found to be non-existent."

    Sigabi said employers were given 21 days to correct matters.
