    Oh thank you so much for the replies! I was so shocked at his insolence, and as you rightly said it is rife in my shop, which leads to other disciplinary issues. Is the correct way to handle this (generally) a no BS attitude from me?

    I think insolence stands at the root of our problem here, and to be honest, I have to (sheepishly) admit, I didn't know it existed. In al my years of management, I have never had to charge any staff member with that. But it points to a pre existing problem, from before we bought the business

    After all these years in and around business, yesterday was the first time I learned that UIF pays out illness benefits.

    Maternity benefits have always been available from UIF, so other ailments are now claimable if more than 14 days from the sounds of things.
