Like the Department of Home Affairs, perhaps?
Last I heard, we might be able to go to a bank to get our Identity Documents in future - so there's a clue on the relative capacity to deliver if ever I saw one.

The only problem is if someone could hack into the general information.......

I was kinda hoping for an easier solution, not a more painful one . For it to be remotely effective, it would need to be a privately run organisation. Possibly along the lines that the cheque clearing system is run?

    I can just see it:

Monday: Go to the bank to collect my new ID book.
Tuesday: Get called back to the bank so they can take a photo copy of the same book they just gave me for FICA purposes.

I'd probably bleed all over the enquiries desk as I bang my head against it in frustration.

How would that be any more of a problem than someone hacking into the current ID information database?

Internet Banking down again (as it was for periods on Friday).
And perhaps more disturbingly, today business online banking is down too (which it wasn't on Friday).

If so, that's my "deadline important" payment for today too.

    Ouch!

Business Online banking is back now (Whew!) but I expect you need internet banking for that one.
And internet banking still seems to be dead.

Makes one nervous when it looks like your bank's core IT might have got the wobbles.
