    Website host

    Hi all

I have a website that is currently up and running and I am thinking of getting a new host but when we started with our current host they gave as a free domain(the one we are using now) and I asked them if they can transfer the domain name into my name("ownership") and they said a client has to be with them 6 months before they transfer they "ownership" but I twisted there arm and they transferred ownership. Now my question is if I move to a new host can they stop me in some way?and is there any hosts you would recommend?Because I am getting a little lake of service. And does the "owner" of the domain get notified when he has to pay the yearly fee?

    Regards L_O_O_M

Did you do a lookup in http://co.za/whois.shtml to verify that the domain is in fact in your name and that the details all reflect you. Once you own a domain, you may move it and host it anywhere you choose. The new Hosting folk would send a request to the old guys and ask for a release of that domain. Normally ISP's/hosters do this quite quickly but sometimes they can play silly buggers and delay this.I have about 16 domains registered in the co.za arena and have done this many times without major difficulty.

Sneakie and I are heading down similar lines.

There are a few things you want to check on the record.

When it comes to billing, pay attention to 2.g - Billing email. This is where the account notifications are sent to.

2.a is the registrant, effectively the owner of the domain.
4.g is the admin email - which is the email address that should be used to send instructions to Uniforum to change any of the details.

6.x is the nameserver - and this is pretty important when it comes to changing hosts as there are a few ways to do it, depending on your level of access to the existing nameserver and your ability to draw a full account backup from your existing web host.

Elitehost has given me good service, and I see for R150 per month you can get a VPS!

For great service - 24 hours ! - I would like to recommend my hosting provider : webspacebar.co.za
Only R145-00 per year for a 50mb package including .co.za domain, with no restrictions.

League_of_ordinary_men, once you have 'sorted' the free domain issue with your current host, the guys at "webspacebar" will assist you to transfer a domain that you can prove is yours.
You will need to supply the required proof of ownership to ".co.za" - e.g. invoice for hosting or requesting it.
Check their website for details - the link is posted on 'sneakies' reply.

    A tip :
your .co.za domain registration requires all your personal info, be sure to ask whoever registers it for you to substitute your registered residential address with your PO Box. Just to be on the safe side . . .
