When the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great!

When the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

    1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

    2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

    3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

    4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

    5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I wanted to reply, but I suppose now that the Secrecy Bill had been passed I can no longer criticize government.

I guess I am a socialist at heart . I have no time for people who arrives at work and does nothing. I also have no time for people who do not attempt to find a job. However, there are a vast number of people who would love to find a job and cannot. Should they starve to death? I don't think what is happening in the world is right at all. The CEOs and directors of companies pay themselves obscene amounts of money which they do not deserve. No one deserves 70 million a year salary. There is simply no one that magnificent. If they could be paid what they are really worth, there would be more money going around for the people who earn almost nothing no matter how hard they work.

I was recently in my shop and there were some people collecting money for charity. The one girl was loud and getting on my nerves. On closer inspection, I saw that she was really working very hard for the portion of the money she was getting. I needed another employee and approached her. It turned out the collection was a temporary job and she would be jobless in January again. She got tears in her eyes when I offered her the job.

I only employ 3 people in my little business and they are all extremely hard-working. The one is quite young and she started there with an attitude that the world owes her. I had many one-on-one discussions with her about how the world really works and what is expected of her. I was even on the verge of firing her. Something I said somewhere along the line must have stuck, because she is now really pulling her weight.

I think it is too easy to generalise and shrug our shoulders and say "if people want to work they will" and thus relieve ourselves of considering the real problem. There are huge inequalities in the world and it is not linked to what people deserve at all. It is often a matter of luck of birth or opportunities.

I am not saying there are not a lot of lazy bums around. I am saying that there is simply not enough work for everyone who wants to work. Unfortunately, nepotism, employing your cronies and greed all comes into play. As Adrianh says, if only it was so simple.

Youngsters sometimes look for jobs in the wrong places and for the wrong reasons. They do not want to do a "meaningless" or low paying job, but want anything with "manager or executive" attached to it.

Like most of us they look for status and money. Unfortunately that does not buy happiness. Rather find your passion and pursue it. Nobody can tell you that being a dancer, driver, writer, artisan, millwright, painter or any other job is not good enough. Do what you enjoy and what comes naturally. If you can not cook, do not try to become a chef. If you do not like talking to people, do not become a salesman.

To build a house you have to lay a foundation first. Do the groundwork and work at being the best that you can be. You will enjoy what you are doing and will be well rewarded if you do it better than the other guy.

I have seen some youngsters do amazing things. They sometimes just need a nudge in the right direction to find their niche in life.
