Hi all,
I have an order of R160k that I'll be putting in to my supplier tomorrow if all goes well.
PC's, laptop's, software etc
My question:
How much discount can I haggle the supplier for on such a big order? ( If any ).
Thank you

I think it would depend on a million and one things. Is this an account purchase? Do you already have a discount structure in place? Are the goods already on a 'special'? Are the goods 'off the shelf' or would the supplier have bought them in specially?
On the other hand though you won't get a discount if you don't ask so I would certainly ask.

Hi Andy,
No, it's a cash purchase. ( EFT )
I don't have a discount structure in place. The prices quoted are their price list prices.
The goods are not on special.
The goods are off the shelf. Basic stock items. Nothing special or out of the ordinary.
I was thinking of suggesting, "If I place this order could I get a printer to the value of R1200 ex VAT" added at no cost.
What you think?
I'm assuming you're purchasing these goods as a business, not as the end user in which case you should qualify for a substantial discount off the list price. I would certainly speak to them. As a business, our supplier discounts vary greatly between 20% and 65% off the list price. I'm not sure about IT equipment though, it might be tighter margins, for the SCADA systems we put together I import the equipment specially, I only purchase sundry items locally and we shop around various suppliers for these.

Yes, purchasing as a business.
Think of it as a business / reseller / CC or sole prop walking into Rectron for instance, & placing a R160k order.
Most of the wholesalers have fixed discount structures. Your R160K order may seem like a lot of money to you but if you are dealing with a large supplier such as Mustek or Rectron it may not be a lot to them. Another thing is whether you are a registered dealer and whether it is a once off purchase. I think the best is to register yourself as a dealer and see what discount structure they offer.

It's mandatory to be a registered dealer with these companies. They do not sell to the public or end user.
Anyway, I'll ask & see what the response is.
